A serious piece of equipment, stranded in the middle of a finished system
At the heart of a twelve-channel room sat a high-end AV pre-amp and switcher, doing exactly the job it was specified for. It had one problem, and it was not a performance problem: there was no practical way to control it from the rest of the house.
The amplifier shipped with two control options. One was the manufacturer's own phone app, over Bluetooth. The other was an infrared remote — archaic even by the standards of the equipment around it. Infrared is one-way, line-of-sight and blind: you send a command and never learn whether it arrived, or what state the device is in now. That is enough to operate a box from the sofa. It is not enough to build a system on.
So in practice the amplifier sat outside everything. No scenes, no schedules, no touch panel. Changing an input meant finding the right phone and opening the right app, in a house built around everything working together. The dealer asked whether anything could be done, and the honest answer at that moment was that nobody knew.
No documentation, so we learned the language from the device itself
The manufacturer publishes a control document, and it does not describe this model — we confirmed that not one of its commands exists in this amplifier. There was no specification to implement. The amplifier's language had to be worked out from the amplifier.
Listen
We recovered the message format from the device's own replies: how it frames a command, how it proves a message arrived intact, how it describes its settings. Within days we could read everything the amplifier knew about itself — every input, level and channel trim — and set channel trims reliably.
Persist
Reading was solved. Changing the input was not. It refused every reasonable approach, including the most obvious one: asking the amplifier which input it was on, and sending that same answer straight back. Most efforts would have stopped here and reported the device as closed.
Outthink
Rather than guess harder, we changed the question — from what the amplifier should accept to what its own app actually sends. A purpose-built Bluetooth capture rig in our lab answered it immediately. Our command had been correct the whole time. The amplifier reports its input using one set of values and accepts a completely different set; it had been answering our question accurately and refusing our instruction for exactly the same reason.
Prove
That single insight revealed a pattern running through the whole device, and the remaining controls followed quickly. Every one was then confirmed twice — read back from the amplifier, and read off its front panel by an engineer standing in front of it. Two plausible-looking answers turned out to be wrong, and only the front panel caught them.
The amplifier behaves like every other component in the room
Input selection, volume, mute, sound mode, lipsync delay and all twelve channel trims now run from the dealer's existing Control4 and Elan programming — the same keypads, the same remotes, the same touch panels, the same scenes.
Crucially, control runs both ways. Adjustments made at the amplifier's own front panel are read back into the system, so the house never drifts out of step with the room — something infrared could never do. For the homeowner there is no seam. They press the button they always pressed, and the amplifier responds along with everything else.

Working was not the finish line. The first build responded slowly enough to feel like a compromise, and a control that lags is a control the customer stops trusting. We measured every step of the round trip rather than accepting it, and found a cautious delay guarding against a limit the amplifier does not actually have. The result now responds immediately — and still releases the Bluetooth connection between commands, so the customer's phone app keeps working exactly as it always did. Nothing was taken away in order to add the integration.

What we told the dealer before a single promise was made
Three functions this amplifier genuinely does not offer over Bluetooth: power on and off, mute, and menu navigation. We established that by determining they were never built into the product — not by promising them and quietly failing later. Mute we solved anyway, by other means. The other two we said plainly, before the dealer set an expectation with their customer.
A dealer needs to know what a system will do before they sell it, not after.
